Summary

Diesel engines continuously need to meet more stringent requirements of new emission legislations. The progress that has been achieved over the last years was tremendous, and this trend will continue in view of Euro 5. The continuous improvement of the injection system by increasing the injection pressure and the capability of multiple injections are very important contributions in this process. However, this will not be sufficient to meet future requirements. The goal of future combustion concepts is to reduce engine out emissions. Possible approaches are the evolutionary development of the conventional combustion by optimizing the entire system (FIE, air management, EGR), or new concepts such as (partly-) homogeneous combustion. Independent from the chosen combustion concept, sophisticated EGT systems will be indispensable to meet the requirements of applications beyond Euro 5.
