Summary
Charge motion and its relation towards improving combustion process has been and will always be an important issue for engine development. Hence, an in depth understanding and analysis of the correlation among flow, tumble and swirl motion affecting burn duration is essential for optimizing combustion. With additional charge motion in the combustion chamber the proportion air to fuel ratio mixture gets more kinetic energy, which is reflected in a faster flame speed and a shorter burn duration. On the contrary, too much charge motion may hinder mass air flow which leads to a reduction in performance. Therefore, a balance between the former and later must be investigated and their correlation to combustion process should be examined. This paper will outlined ROTAX´s inlet port developmental research work in producing more efficient high performance engines by taking charge motion and its influences towards combustion into consideration.
