Summary
The introduction of Euro 4 engineering in commercial vehicles beginning in 2005 will lead to a reduction of the PM emission limits to 2.7% of the values of 1988. This means that, despite increasing kilometrages, a reduction of the PM emissions of commercial vehicles in Germany to a quarter of the values of 2000 by 2020 can be forecasted. Since commercial vehicles contribute only 7-10% to the man-made particulate emissions in Europe, a future reduction of the Euro 4/5 PM limits for commercial vehicles by 33% to 20 mg/kWh (ETC) will suffice to bring the restrictions on particulates to an end. This is supported from a medical point of view by the existence, verified in several cases, of a threshold for the secondary genotoxic effect of the diesel particulates. A reduction below 20 mg PM/kWh requires a unproportionately high fuel consumption and amount of maintenance work...
Lectures from the International Vienna Motor Symposium can be ordered from the Austrian Society of Automotive Engineers (ÖVK). Lectures can only be purchased in the form of the complete conference documents, individual lectures are not available.
When placing an order, please note the year/name of the event (e.g. "45th International Vienna Motor Symposium 2024") for the further ordering process.
Members of the Austrian Society of Automotive Engineers have access to all lectures of the International Vienna Motor Symposia.
