Summary

The attractiveness of modern passenger cars with turbocharged diesel engines is caused by high rated power, excellent dynamic behavior and low fuel consumption. High performance turbochargers make an essential contribution to these features. The function characteristics of turbochargers such as thermodynamics, fatigue and NVH (Noise Vibration Harshness), can be improved using simulation methods. Particularly, combined flow and structure computations allow predictions of, for example, the operational demands on the turbocharger caused by temperature cycles. New methods in fatigue analysis enable superposition of thermal strain and cyclic stress due to vibrations.
