Summary
Tribological systems are subject to requirements that are sometimes in conflict with each other. This paper has attempted to present the significant associated aspects. In the design of tribological systems, one difficulty is the current lack of generally valid theories of friction. Irrespective of whether high friction is specifically sought in order to transmit forces and torques or whether friction is a disruptive factor since it reduces efficiency, one must depend on series of empirical tests since there is still no deep understanding of the physical relationships involved. This paper is thus also intended as an appeal to formulate principles of tribology that will permit better designs.
