Summary
Downsizing as a central element of CO2 strategies, can favorably be combined with additional thermodynamic actions on the combustion system, like stratified lean part load and furthermore cooled EGR full load operation. As soon as downsizing is introduced also to small and medium vehicle classes, with NA engines ranging from 1.4 to 2.0 L. displacements, downsized displacements between e.g. 0.9 and 1.3 L need to be considered. This triggers the requirement to cope with the NVH characteristics of engines with less than 4 cylinders, as well as with a strong shift of the balance between engine energy losses and vehicle systems of medium sized vehicles, depending on those losses.
