Summary

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) approved the Omnibus Rulemaking package in August of 2020. This regulation includes a significantly more stringent NOX standard in addition to many other regulatory changes, such as the introduction of a new Low Load Cycle, more stringent Heavy-Duty in-use standards, extended warranty and full useful life requirements for Heavy-Duty diesel engines. The new standards require a reduction of tailpipe NOX emissions by 75 % in 2024 and 90 % in 2027, compared to today’s levels. These new, more stringent standards will require a significant shift in technology to address NOX generated under cold-start and low load operation, as well requiring that system performance be independent of driving conditions under in-use testing....
