Summary

Due to their thermodynamically benefits the Gasoline Direct Injection Engines of the Second Generation show for gasoline engines the highest potential to reduce fuel consumption. On the other hand restrictions are given by the use of a conventional spark ignition system concerning the optimal position of ignition initialization and spark-plug wear. The combination of Laser Induced Ignition and Gasoline Direct Injection Engines of the Second Generation enables a flexible choice of the ignition location, the possibility of ignition inside the fuel spray and a wear resistant initialization of the combustion process. In this paper the fundamentals of Laser Inducded Ignition are pointed out and their potential compared with a conventional ignition system is presented. Furthermore investigations are shown regarding the minimum necessary laser energy, the contamination and wear characteristics of the combustion chamber optics.

Lectures from the International Vienna Motor Symposium can be ordered from the Austrian Society of Automotive Engineers (ÖVK). Lectures can only be purchased in the form of the complete conference documents, individual lectures are not available.
When placing an order, please note the year/name of the event (e.g. "45th International Vienna Motor Symposium 2024") for the further ordering process.
