Summary
Because of permanent tightening of the emission standards the company MAN Diesel decided to introduce a common rail system in the sector of the small medium speed engines, like actually at the engine type L21/31. The responsibility for the complete fuel injection system is at R. Bosch in Hallein. As a result of this cooperation a heavy fuel oil capable and fully retrofitable injection system was developed, which is similar to a standard Common Rail System. Main feature of the system is a 2/2- and 3/2-way-valve switching unit, which is integrated in the injector. The unit is located upstream a standard spring loaded injection nozzle. Thereby a separate servo oil circuit could be avoided. Engine performance measurements with the CR injection system showed a significant potential for improvement regarding the BSFC -NOx-PM trade off. Based on these positive results it is planned to test the system on an engine in field starting in 2008.
