Summary

Non-exhaust emissions have recently received increased attention, as brake and tire wear will be regulated for the first time in the upcoming Euro 7 regulation. For tire emissions the wear rate (the total mass loss of a tire) will be regulated, while brake emissions will be assessed by means of airborne particle mass and number concentration. Airborne fine dust and nanoparticles are a major concern for public health. Therefore, also the airborne part of tire abrasion, even though reportedly in the range of single-digit percentage of the total wear, needs to be taken into account. In this study, we use an outer drum test rig to implement the well-known JASIC test cycle for tire wear testing. The test rig is equipped with a particle sampling enclosure resembling a sealed system, tightly controlled air flow, and instrumentation for accurate determination of aerosol metrics (PN, PM2.5 and PM10). The main results show the effects of varying the drum surface texture and using talc powder on wear and particle formation in order to achieve a realistic emission behavior on the test rig. Finally, guidelines for reproducible and realistic measurement of tire particulate emissions are provided.
