Summary
LiDAR sensors provide high potentials due to its precise distance sensing. Different technologies are in development leading to a variety of different sensors based on the LiDAR principle. Although all of these sensors are referred to as "LiDAR". The differences in the components and technology makes a comparison of the specification and performance difficult. A standardised LiDAR sensor specification and test procedure does not exist up to now.
This paper provides an overview on the state of the art of LiDAR sensor technology and introduces the idea for a common sensor specification and test methodology in order to perform comprehensible LiDAR sensor tests.
