Summary
The main scope of the Automotive Industry is to find environmental friendly solutions for the rising mobility demand despite of limited energy resources. This leads to the question, if future Diesel engines will play a similar role as energy saving concepts than today. The article describes the sharp rising functional behaviour of BMW Diesel engines in the last 20 years as well as the success factors of current BMW Diesel vehicles in Europe. Based on the current ecological judgement of BMW Diesel drive trains the future global requirements are explained. Afterwards BMW´s target of “Efficient Dynamics” which includes answers to all future global requirements will be addressed. This includes brief explanations to Diesel specific questions for the future. Based on the new Diesel vehicles X3 3.0sd and 335d the latest interpretation of “Efficient Dynamics” for diesel cars is described. There are also encouraging concepts to solve the key issue “NOx reduction”, which are explained in the article.
Members of the Austrian Society of Automotive Engineers have access to all lectures of the International Vienna Motor Symposia.
