Summary

The North American Pipeline network is more than 50 years in operation. The gas is being pumped by an aging population of more than 8000 2SC and 4SC integral compressor engines. Due to upcoming emissions legislations these either have to be upgraded to lower emission standards or have to be replaced in operation. The paper covers development of and operational experience with an electronic high pressure direct gas injection system, which enables stable engine operation under lean burn conditions with NOx emissions below 1g NOx /bhp-hour (1.34 g NOx/kWh).
