Summary

The aim of this study was the development of a simulation tool, that can be used to determine the optimal design of hydrogen tanks for a vehicle equipped with a direct-injection hydrogen combustion engine (DI-HICE).

For that, different types of hydrogen tanks were considered, such as conventional tanks and experimental spherical tanks. This spherical storage solution offers a number of advantages, including a substantial increase in gravimetric energy density. Irrespective of the geometry, the implementation of multi-storage systems provides the opportunity for flexible incorporation into existing installation space. An essential feature of the multi-storage systems is their capacity to provide the requisite injection pressures through the tank's internal pressure, a feature that is particularly pertinent for direct-injection hydrogen combustion engines (DI-HICE). This innovative concept has the potential to eliminate the requirement for a costly, maintenance-intensive, and energy-consuming compressor system. Moreover, the utilisation of multi-storage systems ensures that the range remains unaffected at low filling levels, a concern that arises with conventional high-pressure tanks due to pressure reduction.
