Summary
In order to achieve the future CO2 fleet targets, it is necessary to continuously improve the efficiency of the combustion engine and its subcomponents [2,5]. Cost-conscious solutions for current and future volume applications are essential to realize a reasonable scaling in the fleet and maintain customer attractiveness. The turbocharger performance significantly influences the internal efficiency of the combustion engine process. Therefore it is always worthwhile to perform the next, effective step in the evolutionary development of the unit. In addition to optimizing aerodynamics and thermodynamics, the bearing system offers a further control variable to improve the overall "turbocharger (TC)" system. The consideration of the 1st main turbocharger equation shows that the mechanical efficiency of the bearing system has an influence on the converted compressor power proportional to the thermodynamic efficiencies. Thus, the reduction of the mechanical power loss is of equal importance with regard to CO2 emissions.
