Summary
Vehicle customers are focusing on environmental friendliness and this has become a dominant driver for powertrain electrification. To enable the full potential of powertrain hybridization, the internal combustion engine (ICE) must be tailored to hybrid applica-tions as a dedicated hybrid engine (DHE). lnstead of developing powertrain compo-nents individually, a holistic systems engineering approach is required to determine the best ICE technology package for hybrid vehicles. There are basically two major approaches for dedicated hybrid engines: simplified, low cost ICEs and concepts that enable maximum ICE efficiency.
