Summary

For electric and hybrid electric commercial vehicles, automated manual transmissions (AMTs) are popular. An AMT is mostly based on the manual transmission by adding clutch and gear shift actuation systems. This technology is easy to access and offers a simple structure and it has a low development effort. But this technical solution also includes some disadvantages. One is traction power interruption during shifting, which cannot be avoided with an AMT. For pure electric vehicle applications powershift capability enabling smooth shifts is mandatory.
