Summary
There is a huge number of possible hybrid drive train structures for passenger cars. Currently the world wide hybrid market is dominated by the so called power split full hybrid systems. On a second rank there are parallel hybrid vehicles with a moderate degree of electrification. A clear correlation of realized hybrid structures with vehicle classes or other factors can not be identified up to now. This article focuses on the question: What does the optimal hybrid look like and which are the influencing parameters? Beginning with an analysis of the properties of the well known structures, the most important influencing parameters on the concept decision are discussed. Cost/Benefit objections are especially taken into account. Based on this a definition is required, what is meant to be optimal, which boundary conditions have to be supposed and which means for improvement are available. Such highly-dimensional, multivariate and possibly time-dependent problems make it difficult to define an easy to follow strategy of making decisions. In this search for the optimum the support by appropriate CAE tools is absolutely necessary. These tools allow to implement the complex interdisciplinary relations between concept and component properties, market requirements, customer benefits and production boundaries. Thus a successful strategy concerning development and market introduction of a new hybridized drive train can be fixed in an early stage.
