Efficient Thermal Management – Key Technology for Cost-Optimized Electric Vehicles

Summary
The widespread growth of electric vehicles is currently hampered by high initial cost and limited suitability for everyday use. A key technology for overcoming these obstacles is efficient thermal management, which can significantly contribute to optimizing the cost and increasing the performance of electric vehicles.
A comparison of the thermal architectures of internal combustion engines (ICE) and electric vehicles (EV) reveals significant differences. Based on this, innovative approaches will be presented to reduce energy consumption, weight and cost through targeted optimization at the component, module, subsystem and system level. At the component level, the focus will be on a comparison of a conventional battery cooling plate with a bionically bonded alternative and a comparison of a conventional cooling module with a bionically optimized variant. In the HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning) area, the use of classical solutions will be compared with various innovative methods of energy recovery. For the thermal management module, different approaches are studied and compared at the system level.
Finally, the presented solutions are evaluated in terms of cost and possible range gains compared to a current reference electric vehicle.
