Summary
After 28 years, Porsche now offers two different power variants of its flat-six engine again both of which are destined for the Porsche 911 Carrera. The output data of the service-proven 3.6l unit (Figure 1) have been specifically optimized and the resulting 239 kW nominal power and 370 Nm maximum engine torque will satisfy even most ambitious cus-tomer expectations. The new 3.8l variant with its 261 kW power output and 400 Nm maximum torque (Figure 2) lends the 911 Carrera S superior driving performances in the sports-car segment and, at the same time, closes the gap with regard to Porsche’s top products - the 911 GT3 and 911 Turbo. These excellent results have been achieved by increasing the engine displacement from 3.596 cm³ to 3.824 cm³, by precisely optimizing the gas-exchange system at the intake and exhaust ends and by further improving the cylinder head cooling concept which allowed the compression ratio to be raised to å= 11.8.
