Summary

Under cold ambient conditions the driving range of electric vehicles decrease significantly. This is due to the fact that the needed energy for cabin climatisation is taken directly from the battery and is similar to the traction energy or even higher. FEV has developed a validated vehicle simulation model to investigate measures to
decrease the energy demand of the heating system. With this model different driving and ambient conditions can be simulated. Based on the results of the simulations an optimized thermal management can be developed. The aim is to reduce the energy
demand of the heating system and at the same time to meet all comfort requirements of the customer.
