Summary
The electrification of vehicle powertrains is a major step towards increasing energy security, improving the quality of the air, and reducing CO2. There is therefore a consensus in industry that electrification is a certainty, while the schedule and the various models are still a matter of heated debate. Whereas electrification is already just starting to penetrate the market, in the form of start-stop systems, beltcoupled or crankshaft-coupled starter-generators, the first pure electric vehicles have been announced to arrive only in the next few years, and genuine readiness for series production is not expected to be achieved until 2020.
