Summary

The cost of Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) powertrains offer a fundamentally new challenge to OEMs: the efficiency, mass and cost of the individual sub-systems are interrelated in such a way that a whole system design approach should be adopted to
find the optimum system solution. Typically, the OEM is motivated to minimise the BEV cost whilst maintaining a desired set of criteria, such as range, top speed and acceleration capability. However, as discussed in this paper, due to the surprisingly large number of powertrain options, finding the optimum solution is non-trivial.
