Summary

One of the primary pillars of the technological shift in mobility solutions is hydrogen as a fuel in combustion engines. It has an inherently small well-to-wheel CO2 footprint and low emissions. At the same time, the hydrogen engine harnesses the maturity and reliability of the combustion engine. In this work, the life cycle balance of the hydrogen powertrain is compared to other combustion engine variants. Thereafter, parameters relevant for the optimal operation of a hydrogen combustion for a medium duty application are analysed using 3D CFD combustion simulations. Based on these results, the combustion relevant technology implications for engine architecture and for the exhaust aftertreatment to fulfill future emission legislation is derived.
