Summary
This paper describes the new 1.4l gasoline engine based on a joint development project within the Daimler-Renault-Nissan cooperation.
The challenge was to develop a new engine within given boundary conditions such as demanding CO2-emission targets, weight and costs, for integration into different vehicle architectures of three OEMs. The project team also managed the challenge to fit this engine into multiple production concepts, as it is assembled on existing as well as on newly built production facilities.
Technical highlights of this engine are the very compact delta cylinder head with partially integrated exhaust manifold and central direct injection, homogeneous combustion, the BSC (bore spray coating) crankcase and the modular adaptable cylinder deactivation.
With this modern, compact and efficient engine, the cooperation between Daimler and Renault-Nissan has taken another large step forward for a common powertrain in their different vehicle platforms to reach significant scale effects.
