Virtual Testing and Calibration as an Efficiency-Enhancing and Evolutionary Methodology in Large Engine Development

Summary
The increasing demands of current and future emission regulations, the pursuit of maximum energy efficiency, and the complexity of systems represent significant challenges for the development of powertrain and energy systems. Virtual development approaches offer substantial advantages, especially for large engines and their specific boundary conditions in the development process (e.g., limited availability of prototype engines and components, high costs and efforts of test bed operations, and restricted possibilities for real-world testing). These approaches include significant reductions in development time and costs, as well as enhanced quality assurance through virtual validation. Rolls-Royce Power Systems has been successfully utilizing AVL’s virtual development methodology for some time, incorporating virtual testbeds, innovative real-time engine models and simulation tools. These methodologies have numerous areas of application, including software validation, OBD, fail-safe investigations, calibration of emissions and performance, driveability and operational tests for different target systems, e.g,. marine, mining truck, etc. Since 2023, Rolls-Royce Power Systems has successfully implemented virtual testbeds (VTBs) in pilot projects, transferring test packages from real test beds to virtual validation environments.
