Designed by Power Demand: An Electric Drive System for Urban Mobility

Summary

MAHLE has developed an electric traction system. Test drives were made to determine the user demand for the required wheel power. For driving a C segment vehicle in the city, a continuous mechanical power of 20 kW is found to be sufficient. The supply voltage of the drive system is set to 48 V. With this, a cost benefit of about 30% in comparison to a 400 V system can be realized. The e-drive comes with a Permanent-Magnet-Synchronous-Machine (PMSM) which has a high power density due to a special rotor design with a high amount of reluctance torque. Via the integrated cooling system, the package and weight could be reduced. Due to its flexible positioning, the system can be used as an electric drive for PHEVs or BEVs. Validation and further system tests are done by the MAHLE 48 V urban vehicle concept.
