Summary

Sustainability is an essential subject in the mobility sector, demanding not only the reduction of energy consumption, but also extending the lifetime of powertrain components.

In this context, particularly in the transition process to new powertrain concepts, thermal management is becoming increasingly important as it offers fundamental levers for both increasing the efficiency of the exothermic but also partially endothermic processes and improving component durability, for example by an enhanced handling of waste heat in fuel cells or the operation of traction batteries in a temperature window desirable for reduced aging.

Because of the ever-increasing variety and hence complexity of vehicle powertrain systems, the use of virtual development methods is crucial for an efficient overall system optimization. These enable not only system-level holistic investigations of the interactions between system components, but also account for the complex specifics of the individual units. Modelbased development methodologies rely on already available ("frontloading"), extensively validated predictive models used specifically to maximize system efficiency and component durability. In addition, the use of physical modeling approaches enables the accurate, cost-efficient assessment of the capabilities of novel thermal management solutions.
