Summary
As part of Cummins’ Destination Zero strategy, Cummins is advancing hydrogen internal combustion engines (H2 ICE) alongside fuel-cell and battery-electric offerings as a practical decarbonization pathway for on- and off-highway markets. Building on the HELM™ fuel-agnostic architecture, current development spans the B6.7H for medium-duty and the X15H for heavy-duty applications. Recent milestones include the start of B6.7H production for Tata Motors in India. The X15H targets diesel-like performance while maintaining familiar packaging, driveline interfaces, and serviceability. These attributes reduce integration risk, preserve payload, enable rapid refueling, and leverage established manufacturing and supplier networks. Cummins’ lean-burn strategy delivers strong power density, efficiency, and transient response. When integrated with diesel-derived lean aftertreatment system and fueled with green hydrogen, the engines achieve ultra-low NOx and near-zero CO₂, positioning H2 ICE to comply with emerging standards such as Euro VII and EPA 2027. This work outlines the X15H development progress, enabling technologies, and market-aligned features that can accelerate early hydrogen adoption in commercial vehicles, and highlights future work to further enhance the competitiveness of H2 ICE technology.
