Summary
To reach Tier 4 emissions limits for high speed diesel engines (rated speed >1500 rpm) with low fuel consumption and high reliability a significant development effort is required for the fuel injection system. The first part of this article will present the demands on the fuel injection system and the possible solutions to be achieved. In addition to the emissions limits for high speed "Off Highway" engines a tightening of the emissions limits for medium speed diesel engines (rated speed <1200 rpm) is also expected. To overcome these challenges there are currently various systems in development, both for diesel fuel and heavy fuel oil applications. For the optimal future use of engines in this size class it is also required to apply electronically governed fuel injection systems in this area. The second part of this article will give an overview of the systems, and the development status, for both diesel and heavy fuel oil applications.
