Summary
This paper presents an innovative approach for targeted development of a hybrid-optimised internal combustion engine (ICE) based on the Volkswagen EA211 1.5l TSI evo assembly kit. The key is consideration of the overall system and analysis of all components and their interaction. Following analysis of the potential of an HEV powertrain with targeted topology, innovative engine technologies for increasing efficiency such as maximum compression ratio, an external low-pressure EGR system, an optimisation of the intake camshaft contour and a passive pre-chamber ignition system were applied to the ICE. These technologies were implemented to the concept step by step and described in their effects. Finally, a targeted operating strategy was developed for dynamic proof-of-concept on an engine test bench.
