Zusammenfassung

LNG dual-fuel engines will play a major role in future shipping. Due to the high H/C ratio of methane, CO2 emissions can be reduced, compared to conventional diesel engines. One problem that can negate the theoretical advantages is methane slip due to its high global warming potential. Unburned methane in state-of-the-art LPDF engines with external mixture formation results from two mechanisms: overflow during valve overlap and incomplete combustion. Methane emissions can possibly be reduced by direct gas injection. In this paper, two different approaches on medium pressure direct injection (MPDI) are investigated on a single cylinder research engine. A good homogenization of the fuel gas can be achieved with an intake synchronous direct injection.
