Summary

A new 1.0 liter three-cylinder turbocharged gasoline direct injection engine has been newly developed as a series of Honda VTEC TURBO engines [1] [2] [3], enhancing both fuel economy and driving performance. Rapid combustion concept realized by high tumble intake port design combined with side-mounted and multihole injection system, and intelligent turbocharger boosting system with electrically controlled waste gate are shared among VTEC TURBO engines. In addition to Dual-VTC (valve timing control system), VTEC (Variable valve timing and lift electronic control system) has been used in the intake valve system in order to realize Atkinson cycle to reduce fuel consumption in low valve lift mode. Also state-of-the-art technologies for friction reduction are adopted to achieve top level of fuel consumption characteristics in class, improving fuel economy by 26% from the previous engine in NEDC mode.
