Summary

PACCAR has released a new engine generation for Model Year 2017 building on the success of its EURO VI and EPA13 engines for which production started in 2013. 3% reduced GHG emission limits as well as customer requirements for low fuel consumption, low weight and reduced packaging space combined with highest uptime were the key drivers of the program. These were addressed firstly through downspeeding together with combustion and air management optimization. Secondly, the parasitic losses were minimized reducing e.g. piston friction and applying on-demand auxiliaries for the coolant, oil and steering pump. The aftertreatment system was reduced in size with significant benefits in weight and customer packaging space on the vehicle. Overall a well-balanced improvement delivering 4% improved fuel economy and excellent driveability.
