Summary
In recent years, digital platforms and ecosystems have successfully emerged in many industry sectors, thereby demonstrating the economic value of data. In contrast, the economic utilization of vehicle data is still limited although initial approaches for vehicle
data platforms have already been implemented. However, the impact of these platforms on automotive companies' competitiveness is not yet evident and depends on the actual design of the data platform and the associated ecosystem. In this paper, the general characteristics of platform-based markets and the relevance of digital platforms for the automotive industry are discussed. Furthermore, key success factors and implications for automotive players are identified.
