Summary

This paper describes the new 1.0L 3-cylinder gasoline engine based on a joint development project within the cooperation between the Renault-Nissan Alliance & Daimler AG.

The challenge was to develop a new modular engine family, this 1.0L 3-cylinder gasoline engine coming together with the 1.33L 4-cylinder gasoline engine used widely within the cooperation between the Alliance & Daimler AG and installed in various
vehicle platforms.

This new 1.0L 3-cylinder gasoline engine was given a primary target to provide a top offer of the Alliance B-segment line-up in Europe, while responding to demanding CO₂-emission targets, weight and costs. For production reasons, the engine had to be industrialized in several Renault-Nissan Alliance plants across Europe.

Technical highlights of this engine are the very compact, one-of-its-kind, delta cylinder head with an up-to-date 250 bar maximum fuel pressure system, central direct injection, homogeneous combustion, partly integrated exhaust manifold and the linerless
cylinder block, called Bore Spray Coating® technology.

As part of the new modular family of small gasoline engines, this 1.0L 3-cylinder, modern, compact and efficient engine co-developed with Daimler (although not used by them), provides the Renault-Nissan Alliance with a significant economies of scale advantage and a major contribution to corporate average fuel economy target.
