Summary
The decarbonization of the transport sector is one of the key challenges of the upcoming years. Hydrogen as a carbon-free fuel used for internal combustion engines in long-haul vehicles represents a fast and cost-effective opportunity to significantly reduce CO2 emissions in the transport sector. For using hydrogen powered internal combustion engines, an effective hydrogen storage is required which provides sufficient hydrogen even at high engine power levels. A sensible option to capture this requirement is the hydrogen storage in spherical storage tanks, so-called spheres. In these spherical storage tanks, hydrogen is stored in gaseous form under high pressure. Such tanks consist of many of these spheres which can be individually controlled and emptied. Thus, unlike conventional pressurized storage vessels, high hydrogen injection pressures which are required for high engine power can be provided by this tank system at any time. In this study, a hydrogen spherical storage system is analyzed for a commercial vehicle application. For this purpose, a 1D simulation model of the tank system as well as the vehicle model is created for a representative commercial vehicle. The simulation results are validated on the basis on map data (engine consumption map, time-dependent hydrogen injection, etc.) of an existing test vehicle. Based on these models, an operating strategy for the tank system is developed and tested using the ETC (European Transient Cycle) for commercial vehicles.
