Accidents Involving Heavy Trucks and Bicyclists: Implications for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems

Summary

Approximately two thirds of crashes between heavy vehicles (HV’s) and bicyclists with serious or fatal injury outcome are right-turning situations. This study characterises right-turning crashes as opposed to other real-world crashes between HV’s and bicyclists and estimates the potential for electronic right-turn assistance. For
62 samples of crashes that occurred in Germany between 2007 and 2012 the collision circumstances were categorised depending on their relevance for a turnassistant. Relevant scenarios showed higher average bicyclist age (54.2 vs. 46.0 years), a significantly greater share of female bicyclists (67% vs. 40%) and daylight conditions (90% vs. 60%) than the remaining scenarios. The surrounding conditions with good visibility and low speeds were favourable for bicyclist detection by sensors.
