Summary

The introduction of the 3- and 4-cylinder gasoline engines from the 2nd generation of the modular design traverse engine family has taken place. Now, the longitudinal applications of the NEXT GENERATION modular design will follow as part of the continuing rollout. During the course of further development, the longitudinal engines will be furnished with the 350 bar injection system with double-injection, the frictionoptimized chain drive and split cooling, as well as a new engine control unit. Aside from the fine optimization of individual components, the cranksha along with the internal cooling have been given an overhaul. The rotational-symmetric form honing of the cylinder surfaces including a new environmentally harmless procedure for twin-wire arc spray bearing surface coating is also used in the longitudinal engines. Furthermore, they have been prepared for future applications with
regard to extended start-stop functionality and electrification.

In contrast to the 4-cylinder longitudinal engine, which has been further developed in a similar way as the transverse engine as part of the reworking, there are additional requirements for the 6-cylinder engine in the target catalog. In addition to the optimizations with regard to fuel consumption, weight and the fulfillment of pending
emission and legal requirements, the objective called for the implementation of a further total ratio spread regarding capacity and character of the drive unit. For the first time with a 6-cylinder engine, a cylinder head integrated exhaust manifold has been
realized that is used in connection with a flanged Twinscroll exhaust turbocharger (ATL) module in the capacity variant of the engine and has clear fuel consumption and weight advantages. The powerful variant has a classic cylinder head that is specially
fitted in smaller vehicles with small cool air inlets. The new 6-cylinder engine with NEXT GENERATION modular design therefore impresses with its superior, efficient capacity engine in large vehicles but also in sporty compact vehicles.
