Summary
This work addresses the fundamentals of immersion and indirect cooling of battery cells through studies on long-term aging of cells, thermal runaway and propagation testing, as well as thermal management efficiency using commercially relevant cylindrical nickel, cobalt and aluminium (NCA) cells. Crucially both immersion and indirectly cooled scaled down modules were designed and built to allow for comparison of the two approaches. To specifically address the key concern of thermal propagation, a number of thermal runaway tests were undertaken with in depth analysis to better understand the effects of change in experimental setup and fluid. The importance of optimisation of the fluid to the system will be shown and subsequent effects on performance. Additionally, the work is underpinned by 3D simulation results which will be shown.
