Summary

Internal combustion engines (ICE) will be the dominant powertrain technology for the next 20 years. Significant potential for reducing emissions and fuel consumption. Great R&D effort necessary for advancement of ICE. At the same time, need for significant additional R&D expense to develop electric powertrain. Financing this R&D effort in an industry with small profit margins is a challenge. Standardization, alliances, and utilization of economies of scale will help to reduce the costs of future powertrain concepts. Industrial landscape for EV is still in flux. Market to undergo changes as technology becomes more mature. New players are attracted by the new technology needs and business opportunities associated with the EV. Established players can prevail if they now build up necessary EV competencies and know how.
