Summary

Long driving-range but sportive driving style, highsafety but affordable – that’s what customers expect from an electrical vehicle. All these requirements are mainly influenced by one key-component: the battery. Currently, the market is dominated by three different Li-Ion-cell-formats and it seems to be a neck-and-neck race between pouch- and prismatic cell types. Especially safety and life-time are heavily discussed as a distinguishing factor. But there are more factors which have to be taken into account, especially with regards to the electrical characteristics. E.g. the right choice of anode and cathode material has a major influence on powerperformance, and costs. LG Chem has developed and is mass-producing Li(NiMnCo)O2 pouch-cells using an optimized ceramic separator and can provide proven solutions how to integrate those into a vehicle. In this presentation, the development of Lithium-Ion battery for the automobile applications is described, specially the electrochemical cell, module and pack technology. Last but not least, some R&D activities on the next generation of lithium batteries are introduced.
