Hydrogen for Internal Combustion Engines – A Viable Alternative for Passenger Car Propulsion

Summary

Upcoming, increasingly stringent greenhouse gas (GHG) limits demand for CO2-free propulsion systems. On the passenger car side, the current mainstream is seen in battery electric vehicles (BEV). Still even in Europe alternatives are investigated and called for by various countries. Hydrogen as fuel for internal combustion engines is already seen as a viable alternative for commercial applications. This paper describes the development of a prototype turbocharged hydrogen DI engine for passenger car application. The basic assumption for this engine was a “minimum hardware changes” approach. Only components required for hydrogen operation were adapted.
