Sequence And Complexity Of Powertrain Launches – Managing The Challenge
Authors

Summary
Within the past 18 month, Ford launched in Europe in 8 European vehicle plants in 6 different carlines more than 20 new or significant modified engine transmission combinations with more than 30 different power levels. High sequence and overlapping timing of build phases in the vehicle plants had to be managed. Appropriate resource management under consideration of global powertrain development matrix responsibilities had to be ensured. High vehicle feature content generates a very complex electrical / electronic interface situation between the vehicle and the powertrain control systems. Coordinated process optimization was key to deliver quality products without launch spikes.
