Summary
Daimler AG is a technology leader in the field of automotive fuel cells. Over two decades, competence, know-how and extensive experience have been built up from component up to vehicle level, in hydrogen infrastructure, as well as by the long-term operation of two generations of vehicle fleets, also in customer requirements. At this point in time, Daimler is releasing the next generation of automotive fuel cells within its innovative plug-in-hybrid fuel cell drive system. Besides the relevant technical improvements and cost reductions with respect to the predecessor generation, the
configuration of the whole drive system including important performance characteristics is explained. Furthermore, an insight into the built up and technology of the new fuel cell engine, which could be accommodated in the engine compartment of a vehicle for the first time, is given. This article is finally completed by a view onto the operating strategy of the drive system, which has been especially developed for this purpose. It combines the two energy sources of the fuel cell and the battery on board of the vehicle in an ideal way.
