Zusammenfassung

A product, a simple commodity providing benefit and value, has always been something consumers, commerce and industry have had their focus on. The matter of cost, however, runs through the entire value chain. What if there were potentials for significantly reducing them but no one dares to accept a certain degree of risk in
return?

The undeniable changes taking place in society in the course of digitization, the immense growth in the complexity of system landscapes as well as previously untapped options are putting increasing pressure on a hardware-focused automotive industry. The value promise to consumers must meet their expectations. Innovations, such as electro mobility and digital products, like MaaS (Mobility as a Service), only satisfy present and future needs in part. In a nutshell: the classic business with the product “car” turning into a benefit promise, and this comes with a price tag. In this customer benefit/customer cost trade-off, automobile manufacturers are very much targeting attention on tangible forms of digitization, such as predictive maintenance (PdM).

The increasing reluctance to pay for mobility, greater price sensitivity and an overabundant supply mean that the manufacturers must drive costs down. In this paper, we on the one hand illustrate today’s opportunities and the technological readiness of approaches towards predictive maintenance. On the other hand, we also paint an overall picture of the present-day show stoppers and deliver a perspective on potential solutions, all of which are underpinned with example applications.
