Zusammenfassung
The Volkswagen Group must address three major challenges when developing its new models and engines: customer expectations are increasingly demanding in respect of variant diversity; emissions legislation worldwide is becoming more stringent; and development cycles are becoming shorter and shorter. In order to meet these heightened demands and manage the higher project workload, the Group has adopted a new strategy and is allocating certain engine development tasks to selected facilities within its global development network.
One example of that is a compact, bestselling engine – the 1.0 l MPI from the EA211 engine family. The further development of this three-cylinder into the 1.0 MPI evo was handled by Ŝkoda in Mladá Boleslav (Czech Republic), where it marked the first step in the establishment of an MPI Competence Centre.
While the new MPI evo combustion process, which is based on the Atkinson cycle, was conceived by the department for advance development, spark-ignition engines in Wolfsburg, the team in Mladá Boleslav was tasked with integrating innovative elements from the evo toolkit into the engine. One of those is the map-controlled cooling module, which rapidly brings the engine up to operating temperature during warm-up. Across the board, close attention was paid to friction reduction, with the tandem sump oil pump playing a major role. As per the camshafts, their adjusters and other modules, the pump was further developed on the basis of an existing component.
The modular 1.0 l EA211 MPI evo is suitable for manufacture at Volkswagen Group plants around the world. It combines competitive production costs with low CO₂ emissions and good dynamic characteristics in customer operation. The new threecylinder will be used by several brands and in multiple models across the Volkswagen Group.
