Zusammenfassung
On the path towards personal mobility based on purely battery electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles with different degree of electrification, combining a combustion engine and an electric motor, will play a significant role well into the next decade. To minimize their impact on the ambient air quality a number of well-established as well as novel aftertreatment technologies currently in development, and combinations thereof can be deployed. This can help to reduce the emissions originating from the internal combustion engine used in these vehicles to levels where they essentially have “zero impact” on he ambient air quality. In this contribution we discuss how advanced catalyst substrate technologies, high efficiency particulate filters and novel electric catalyst heaters can help to achieve this goal. The different technologies will be described and performance data provided. The emission reduction potential of these technologies, especially when combined, will be discussed by means of practical examples and data from system studies and vehicle demonstrators.
