Zusammenfassung

The cathode air path of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells in mobile powertrains is supercharged to increase stack efficiency and power density. As largest auxiliary power consumer, high efficiency requirements are imposed on the electrically driven centrifugal compressor used for supercharging. In this article, a methodology for the system efficiency-optimal compressor design based on fuel cell system simulation is proposed. All design steps are combined in an integrated workflow. Individual, application-specific boundary conditions are considered throughout the entire design process, effectively reducing development time and costs. The potential of expansion turbines and the corresponding design considerations are discussed. Finally, a suggestion on product portfolio setup is given against the background of expected market development
