Simulating surrounding traffic for interactive driving simulators

Simulating driving behavior and vehicle interaction is central to the development of automation techniques as well as the study of human drivers. We present an approach of coupling traditional driver simulators with the open source traffic simulator Eclipse SUMO to generate precise surrounding traffic which reacts to the driver behavior and create a variety of traffic scenarios for testing human and automation behavior.
The proposed system can operate on different time scales for different vehicles and can thus give adaptive precision for the simulated vehicles. Using this approach together with a co-simulation of the vehicles using different engines it is possible to resolve the trade-off between performance for a realistic view and the size of the environment.
We will first describe the two major components of the system, the microscopic traffic simulation package SUMO and the simulation middleware components called DOMINION. The interaction of the components and the unique features will be covered in the second part and we end with an outlook on the future research and applications.
